Caring for Cuts & Scrapes

When it comes to life, cuts and scrapes are a pretty regular thing, especially if you have children. While minor cuts and scrapes may not be a medical emergency, it is highly important to properly care for wounds so that they do not become infected and can heal properly. Have a cut or scrape? Here is how to care for cuts and scrapes:

  • Stop the bleeding. Depending on the severity of your cut or scrape, bleeding can vary. However, it is important to stop the bleeding. To do so, apply direct pressure on top of the injury using gauze, tissue or a clean cloth. This will stop the flow of blood, allowing it to coagulate and stop bleeding. Remove pressure every so often to monitor the bleeding. If it does not stop after a couple of minutes, visit Preferred Urgent Care, and we can take care of it for you.
  • Clean the wound. Once you have properly stopped your wound from bleeding, you should gently (so the wound does not re-open) but thoroughly clean your wound with soap and warm water. Do not scrub or use hot water as this can promote further bleeding. Make sure that any debris is completely removed.
  • Disinfect the wound. After you have completely cleaned the wound, you should disinfect the area using an antimicrobial. An antimicrobial can help to kill any bacteria that has entered the wound. Gently apply the antimicrobial on top of the wound before any bandaging.
  • Protect the wound. Although your wound will eventually form a natural bandage (a scab), it is important to protect it for about 2 days. Depending upon the size of your wound there are a variety of supplies that can be used from Band-Aids to gauze and surgical tape. We recommend changing any dressings relatively often to reduce the risk of infection along with re-applying any antibacterial ointment.
